Ploughing and trenching are direct-burial methods of installing underground services, where conduit, cable or pipe is placed into the ground in a continuous run rather than through a bore. Ploughing uses a static or vibratory blade to open a narrow slot and feed product in behind it in a single pass, while trenching uses chain or wheel machines to cut an open trench that is then backfilled once the service is laid.
Where ground conditions include basalt, sandstone or other competent rock, rock sawing is used to cut a clean, narrow trench profile that conventional trenching equipment cannot achieve. Because the cut is precise, excavation volumes, spoil cartage and reinstatement extent are all significantly reduced compared with breaking rock by excavator or rock hammer.
These methods are well suited to long runs in rural, greenfield and roadside corridors, including telecommunications and fibre, electrical reticulation, water and irrigation mains, and renewable energy site cabling. Multiple ducts or services can often be installed in a single pass, and depth of cover, alignment and reinstatement are recorded to meet asset owner and authority requirements.
